Cannon Shell Cache

The Cannon Shell cache is hidden at the Indian Temple Mound in Fort Walton Beach and since it's always fun to wander over the Mound we went out to search for the cache.

The cache is in front of where they’ve moved the old schoolhouse - out in front of the mound.

For some reason I thought it was in the little camellia park across from Fort Walton Beach Landing so we parked there and then walked over.

The camellia garden is in full bloom and gorgeous this time of year. There are so many different colors and kinds.

We got across 98 (scary) and the clue was A Lot of Clams and since the GPS took us to the shell fence we started looking all over the fence.

We looked and looked and looked for a good 10 minutes or so.

There is an old cannon there so the boys had a good time messing around with that but eventually it became clear that we weren’t going to find the cache and it was about time to move on.

There was another fence on the other side of the driveway and even though the GPS told us we were in the right place I told the Island King I was going to walk over to the other fence and take a quick look.

I got about halfway across the parking lot when a woman dressed like an old school marm came running out of the schoolhouse and said "You were in the right place – don’t give up!"

We walked back to the first fence and she said "Do you want a clue?"

Since we had almost given up anyway we told her that we’d love one.

She told us to look over the fence to the other side.

We had been doing that but I turned around, looked over the fence and looked right at it.

Can you see it?

I couldn’t believe it. It was right where we’d looked many times.

It was a white film canister with black paint smeared on it and it blended right in with the oyster shells in the fence.

So a special thanks to the school marm or we wouldn’t have found this one.
