Do Dogs Throw Temper Tantrums?

Last night as the Island King was coming to bed the cat woke up and wanted to be fed. So the Island King filled the cat's bowl with wet food and within a second the puppy came running down the hall trying to get to the cat's food. The Island King picked the puppy up and brought him back to the bedroom and closed the door. The puppy started whining at the door. The Island King is a night owl so it's about 3:30 in the morning and he doesn't want the puppy to wake everyone else up so he sits down on the floor with the puppy and is trying to distract him. The puppy just keeps getting louder and louder and by now I'm awake and want to know why in the hell the dog is making so much noise. The Island King tells me the pup wants the cat's food and is whining so he'll open the door. I told him to just get in the bed and maybe the puppy will give up and go to sleep. The Island King gets in the bed and the puppy goes from whining to barking. He gets back up and tries to pick the puppy up to put him up in the bed with us and the puppy wiggles away from him, throws himself flat on his back with his legs straight up in the air and begins to howl. At full volume. We're both staring at the puppy now and he just lays there on his back, legs in the air, howling at the top of his lungs. "What is he doing?" I ask. The Island King starts to giggle and says "I think he's throwing a temper tantrum" The dog looked so funny laying there with his legs in the air, howling, that we both started laughing. The louder and longer the dog howls, the harder we laugh. By now both of us are practically hysterical and the pup howls even louder. Of course the howling is so loud now that all three kids are awake and come running into our room to see what's happening. As soon as they opened the door, the puppy rolls over, jumps up and runs as fast as he can to the cat's bowl in the kitchen. We all follow him but the cat has eaten all of the food so the puppy is licking an empty bowl. Before the Island King could reach down and get the bowl the pup finishes licking the bowl and falls over on his side, completely exhausted. We literally had to carry him back to the bedroom and put him in his bed, where he promptly fell asleep. The puppy has constant access to his food and he was chowing down right before I went to sleep so it's not like the dog is hungry - he just wants that wet cat food. Do dogs throw temper tantrums? I've never seen anything like this in my life! And I've certainly never seen a dog lay on his back and howl. What do you do about a puppy throwing a tantrum? It was hysterical then but it was also the middle of the night and it won't be funny if it happens very often. The kids went back to bed and the Island King and I laid in our bed, still laughing and wondering what to do about this. The whole event took almost half an hour and then it took me almost an hour to fall back asleep so it was about 5:oo before I fell asleep good and then the alarm went off at 6:30 so this morning I feel like a truck hit me. And of course the puppy is still sound asleep. We always wind up with animals who have really odd personalities. I guess it just sort of fits - we're all a little odd too LOL
