Duck Bath

The Island King and I spent some time yesterday afternoon in a new park on Santa Rosa Sound in Fort Walton and were treated to a very interesting show.

These geese were standing at the edge of the water eating the grass growing there.

We watched them for a minute and then these guys came swimming up.

The geese got real defensive and wouldn't let the ducks come ashore.

This lady (I think she's a she - correct me if I'm wrong) came swimming up all be herself and she was squawking at the top of her lungs. The other ducks swam over to her and she squawked a little more. I don't know what she said but it must have had something to do with bathing because when she finished they all split up and began taking a bath. All of them.
They would put their heads in the water and then throw their heads back, slinging water all over them

They'd get good and wet

And then shake themselves dry.
Every single one of them were doing it at the same time, getting wet, shaking off and then getting wet again. They were clucking softly to themselves and seemed oblivious of everything else. This went on for about 10 minutes and then when they finished they all swam off together.
I've never seen a mass duck bath before and it was quite a show.
