Destin Christmas Tree Lighting

December 1st was the 25th annual Destin Christmas Tree lighting ceremony and even though the kids were busy doing other things the Island King and I went.

It's held at the Destin Community Center, which is always decorated to the hilt for the holidays.

Santa and Mrs. Claus were there posing for pictures with everyone, including Miss Destin.

And me!

Cyron Marler, a member of one of Destin's founding families, was the MC and he started the event with a prayer.

With all of the "say Holiday - not Christmas" nonsense going on our around country I can tell you that I am extremely proud to live in a community where we still pray at community gatherings and where Christmas is acknowledged for what it is - The Birth of Christ.

Kids from the local schools sang songs while the crowd helped themselves to free coffee, hot chocolate and cookies.

There was popcorn too.

I'm pretty sure this is why most of the pictures the Island King took are blurry. There's nothing like a little oil and butter on your fingers while trying to take pictures lol

Mr. Marler told us that when he was a child Destin was a small place with just a few families living there.

They would all gather on Christmas Eve and sing Jingle Bells as loud as they could to insure that Santa wouldn't forget to stop on our little island.

So the crowd sang Jingle Bells

The Christmas Tree was lit and Santa won't forget to stop in our little corner of the world.

Christmas is coming!
