We’ve been catching all kinds of stuff in our crab traps but
I think the Puffer Fish has to be the coolest yet.
They have beautiful green eyes and true to their name will
puff up like a balloon.
It’s funny to watch but I was glad when this one deflated
and we were able to get him back in the water.
FYI: Puffer Fish are believed to be the second most
poisonous vertebrates in the world. Their livers and sometimes their
skin are extremely toxic to fish and humans.
I’ve read that certain parts of the meat are considered a
delicacy in Japan
but it has to be prepared by a chef who knows exactly which parts can be eaten
and even then the portions must be limited to prevent sickness.
Needless to say, we don’t eat them. We admire them for a
moment and then back into the Bay they go.
