Labor Day in Destin

Traditionally we spend Labor Day at the beach. We were there today but it wasn't quite the same.

This is the beach we usually go to

This is what that beach looked like today

All public beaches in the county were closed today. Completely closed. They had every boardwalk taped off

And patrols going up and down the beach

telling anyone who ignored the tape to get off the beach. I've seen them declare the water off limits but I've never seen officials actually rope off and close the beach. You could stand on the boardwalk all you wanted but you couldn't walk on the beach at all.
The waves were huge

The Okaloosa Island Fishing Pier was open so we walked out to the end and wave watched for a bit.

Normally, there are a lot of birds out on the pier. Gulls, herons, pelican, all kinds of water birds spend their time cruising the pier for unattended bait. This is the only bird out there today.

I don't know if he was lost, confused or determined but whatever he was, he was all alone.

This is the Gulfarium

And the Boardwalk

It's a long way back to the beach from out here

Not a good day to play on the beach

So today wasn't our traditional Labor Day but considering that we could have taken a hit from Gustav, I'd say it was a great day.
