It's starting to feel like I need to change the name of my blog to Sandcastle Momma's Geocaching Blog because we've been doing a lot of caching lately and it seems like that's all I post about anymore.
But we've had some great adventures!
There is a night cache in the Timberlake area that we've been wanting to try and Sunday night was the perfect time.
Night caches are designed to only be found at night. You're given a starting point coordinate and then from there you use a flashlight to follow reflective stickers that have been put on trees by the cache creator.
I was really looking forward to it but also a little hesitant considering my last night cache experience.
I don't know how I manage to do it but I always end up picking night caches on seriously cold nights and this one was no different.
So we bundled up and then waited at the picnic table by the lake for it to get good and dark.
The sun setting over the lake was beautiful.
My Dad read us the instructions for finding the cache which was to start at the Golden Spider trailhead.
The Youngest Island Boy is terrified of spiders and it took us quite a while to convince him this was a family friendly cache and that no spiders would attack him.
We hoped.
Once it got good and dark we were ready to start our adventure.
The instructions were to follow white reflectors that had been placed on the trees along the trail.
Can you see the little white dot on the tree? They were spaced pretty far apart and several times we found ourselves wandering around looking for the next one. We'd wander for a minute and then go back to the last reflector we'd found and try again.
With a little work we managed to find them and stay on the trail.
The cache log told us that when we found the smiley face of white reflectors the cache would be near.
After hiking for a bit my Dad found the smiley.
After a quick look around the Youngest Island Boy found the cache.
We traded out some trinkets and signed the log.
Now all we had to do was find our way back to the lake.
The cache creators put two small dots (like spider eyes) on the backs of the trees to lead you back out to the lake.
Luckily these reflectors were a little closer together and easier to find so making our way back out was easy.
We had so much fun! Hiking through the woods at night is so different from hiking during the day. Everything looks and sounds different and the woods just have a different feel to them.
We made it back to the lake and then to the truck - where we were glad to crank the heater up and get warm.
We had so much fun and really appreciate the time and effort that the cache creators took to make this cache.
And the best news of all was that the Youngest didn't run into one spider - thank God. Him freaking out in the dark in the middle of the woods would NOT have been good!Labels: Done
